The company says the stumper can be paired with Solesbee’s excavator thumbs to lift and stack stumps, debris and limbs, and the company says it also features claws on the back of each shank to push stumps away from the excavator. This, Solesbee’s says, enables operators to better position stumps and other materials to grab and pick up using the attachment and excavator’s thumb.

Similar to grading, pressure is key. Again, too much and this time the cutting edge will bear the brunt of the damage. A popular way around this snafu is to both practice, and utilize your machine’s “float” function if equipped.

Bucket width should be at least as wide as the outside width of the tires or tracks. If not, you will be unable to dig or scoop in one pass. The tires or tracks will ride up on the material and the bucket will not remove that material. In contrast, buckets that exceed the capacity rating of the machine risk imbalance and tipping due to load size. As well, larger buckets can handicap the operator’s vision, if installed on a smaller machine.

“Rotating or tilting buckets are usually ditching or grading buckets, so they are normally wide and have a short tip radius with low capacity,” says Lee Horton, Leading Edge Attachments. “They offer the advantage of being very effective at shaping the ground to create non-flat surfaces. The weight of the tilting mechanism is usually not an issue because a ditching and grading bucket is normally not used for bailing or digging large amounts of material.

The Stumper 280 stump grinder from Stumper Industries, Calumet, Mich., are compatible with regular skid-steers, mini excavators and backhoes and mini front loaders and utility task vehicles (UTVs). The 650-lb. grinder includes a 28-in. cutting diameter and 8-in. cut depth per pass.

“The machine had plenty of power with the shovel,” said Frieders. “We were able to excavate aggressively in an area that had not been disturbed for a long time and fill the bucket completely. On some machines, digging with the bucket in the shovel position can be difficult.”
